I am a late-starter harp player!
At 55 years of age I spontaneously bought a small harp with a huge sound in a shop.

It’s 4am. I’m awake (barely), bags packed and I’m ready to do the one hour drive to the airport to make a 6am flight. I’m headed to Brisbane for a two week stint with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO). It’s been nearly four years since playing with them. Four years!

Jo Baee, Harp Technician visits FNQ

In November we were fortunate to have Jo Baee, harpist and fully qualified harp technician, pay a visit to the Cairns region.

A review of new music by Earth + Sky, Loni Fitzpatrick and Stu Harcourt duo concert in Mossman.

To a background of gently swaying trees, Hannah guided us through a program of beautiful pieces from a variety of composers interspersed with her own quite remarkable compositions.

It was a delightful afternoon jam packed with stories, improvisations … and of course, tea and scrumptious sweets!

Our second (ever) retreat got underway in October 2022 and was again a jam-packed weekend celebration of all things harp, good conversation and great food.

Emily Granger performed her album In Transit at St Monica’s Cathedral in Cairns. The setting was lovely and Emily’s bright personality, interesting program and polished performance were inspiring and enjoyable for all.

In October 2021, it seemed perfect timing to gather harp players from the Tablelands for a chat and a good coffee. We met at The Closet Hippy in Malanda (photo). For some it was the first tune-up for their harp in a long time. Our hearts were full and our tastebuds satisfied. Most important was the inspiration to play…

In the lush Kuranda rainforest perched above the Barron River is the humble abode of artist Sandi Steffensen. A beautifully manicured garden filled with an array of tropical natives and home to a bustling collection of butterflies and birds at day and a starry sky’s worth of fireflies at night. Sandi’s home is truly magical and inspiring which made it the perfect spot to spend a weekend with a wholesome group of harp lovers and appreciators creating nine new baby cardboard harps for the FNQ area.
